The storyworld

A frontier in permanent twilight.

One Hundred and Two Lightyears Away is a science fiction western. Humanity's last survivors arrive on VOI 700 D as refugees, not conquerors, and have to earn a place on a divided planet. Frontier hardship, political tension, fragile coexistence, advanced technology, and post-crash scarcity, all at once.

VOI 700 D

One planet. No day. No night. Three worlds.

The planet always shows the same face to its red dwarf. Scroll along the terminator from the scorched side, through the twilight belt, into the dark.

01 · Up to 70 °C · eternal day

Desert Side

East of the belt the star never sets. Sand moves in walls, the ground reaches seventy degrees, and nothing that came from Earth lasts long without protection. Few go there. Fewer come back with what they went for.

02 · 20–28 °C · 400–500 km wide · eternal sunset

Habitual Belt

A strip four to five hundred kilometres wide where the light is always the last minutes of sunset. Twenty to twenty-eight degrees, all year, forever. Every settlement but one stands here, on ground the Native Tribes held long before the ship came down.

03 · Down to −70 °C · eternal night

Dark Side

West of the belt the night does not end. Minus seventy on a clear day. Copper under the ice, heat under the volcano, and one town that burns lanterns against all of it. Those who want to be forgotten walk west.

Three ages

Exodus. Settlement and war. A fragile peace.

The storyworld spans three eras. Each one is a different kind of story, and the wiki holds the dated record.

  1. The Alpha Age

Earth is failing. In 2421 the multigenerational ship Last Frontier leaves Kourou with humanity’s last chance aboard. Eighty years later the first destination turns them away by force. The council votes. The ship turns toward a planet no one has seen.

    • The Last Frontier launches from Kourou. Destination: a planet forty light years away. The Last Frontier (102 Wiki)
    • At Trappist-1 the ship is attacked during landing preparations. 2,500 die. The council votes to go on.

  2. The Beta Age

2625. The Last Frontier crashes on VOI 700 D. The survivors are given an emergency camp by the people who already live there. Settlements rise, a Free State is declared, a mine opens in the dark. Within four years the alliances break and the Great War begins.

  3. The Gamma Age

The war is lost and a treaty is signed. The Free State is dissolved, a Federal Confederation is voted in, and humanity lives on reservations it does not own. Peace brings elections, parties, bureaucracy, and the old question in a new form.

Three peoples

Power, knowledge, belonging. Not evenly shared.

Each people holds something the others lack. The wiki has the detailed portraits; here is enough to understand who is at the table.

ExoHumans

Around twenty-five thousand descendants of the exodus. They arrived with the technology of a starship and lost most of it in the crash. What remains is rationed, regulated, or jury-rigged. Their power is knowledge. Their weakness is remembering being dominant.

Native Tribes

Some seven and a half million people who call the planet Shang-Gha-Lea and have lived in its twilight belt for longer than human history. They granted the survivors a camp. They also went to war with them. Their belonging is not in question. Everyone else’s is.

Zonko

The third people of the storyworld. What they know, what they want, and what they think of humans is best learned in the wiki, one careful page at a time.

The central question

What does it mean to be human?

Stripped of its cradle, its dominance and its certainties, humanity has to answer two questions on VOI 700 D. Who are we, seen through other eyes? And who can we become, if we choose not to repeat what doomed Earth?

This is not a story about heroic colonization. Nobody here is entitled to the planet. The setting keeps asking whether the survivors can stop repeating what ended Earth, and it does not promise an answer.
